Descriptor.

Commercial Connection is a documentary film following the journey of three students taking a break from social media for a month and seeing the change through their artwork.

Problem.

Quitting social media for 1 month can have positive effects of mental health, yet measures of subjective well being in research are limited to simple rating scales asking people how they feel from 1-7. Understanding the complex problem by reducing our emotions into statistics misses out on other aspects of how social media is changing our relationships, cognition, and culture for commercial interest.

Solution.

The film, Commercial Connection will show the effect of quitting social media using art as a conduit into our youth subject's minds. Using art to tell their stories will allow for a greater understanding of the problem. Education is what enables users to break the spell of endless scrolling on their phones allowing for a wider array of life decisions to make besides consuming more content.
